Soccer, the American Alias for Football

While the rest of the English-speaking world calls the arguably history’s most famous sport as football, the United States of America and Canada take a different turn and decided to dub it soccer. Granted, football may refer to any sport that involved one, or sometimes more, balls played with human body parts involving feet, but to derive it so far as not using any relevant word at all surely raises a lot of questions. Why do our American and Canadian friends prefer to use the word? How does the word come into being the substitute for football?

Something that you need to know first and foremost is that North Americans did not invent the word soccer. It was—you may or may not be surprised—the British’s doing. Around 1860, back when the elite British invented the game and then started to roam around kicking ball with their petticoats, they refer to it as “Association Football”. It was then abbreviated into “Assoccer“, from a slang form of “assoc”, and later the less mouthful “soccer”. The word was used for a full 18 years before ‘football’ took over. This occurred when the game trickled down to middle and lower class of the society and was gradually growing on them. These common Briton folks chose the much friendlier term of football.

When Britain started to expand its territory to the whole world, they bring this game along with them to every place they visit (or conquer). The sport arrived at the early land of America in the late 19th century and was still known as Association Football, not yet soccer. Some believe that it is due to the rise of American Football that they started to set apart the sport to avoid confusion. It was widely known as soccer there since around post-World War II, and has been so since. Until today, the popularity of soccer in America has always come in the umpteenth rank if compared to that of American Football. Yet it doesn’t seem to have anything to worry about, since soccer—or football, for discussion’s sake—has already reigned over the hearts of most sport enthusiasts in the planet.

Soccer: Love the Game, Love the Player

If you happen to love sport, chances are you at least have taken a liking in soccer. This simple but very addictive sport is indeed interesting to watch, especially when you have a deep idolization for the players. Guys will mostly be fans for their ferocious performance in field, while girls will be most likely to swoon over some of their undeniably attractive physical appearance. Here we will discussed a few of the world’s most famous soccer players history has ever known, while including the two above elements (ability and physique) as consideration.

Let’s start with David Beckham. Arguably, Beckham is history’s most well-known soccer player. As a midfielder, he started his career in 1996 with the English national team. It wasn’t long for him to become a world-class celebrity, both on the field and on the media. This can be attributed not only to his expertise of long-range free kicks, but also his charming face, his ex-Spice Girls supermodel wife Victoria, and his seemingly endless sensationalism. Another noteworthy name is of course Pelé. Although lacking in Calvin Klein model-esque quality Beckham flaunts, Pelé has gained worldwide reputation as some kind of soccer guru. He began his debut in 1995. By the time he was 17, Pelé has already taken his native country, Brazil, to snatch the 1958 World Cup, and continued to do so for two more times on 1962 and 1970. So acknowledged he was that he is often said to be the one who popularizes soccer in the United States of America.

Even though this is a male-dominated sport, it doesn’t mean that women don’t have an equal part in the world of soccer. Mia Hamm, an American, is a greatly acclaimed woman soccer player. In 1999, she participated in Women’s World Cup title and helped her country win the trophy. The same year recorded her as the leading scorer in the history of international soccer, be it men or women. She was then named as the world player of the year for the two consecutive years, in 2001 and 2002. This proved that the sport does not merely belong to a gender. Whether It is man or woman, a player or a fan, soccer is a part of everyone. When you love the game, you will certainly love the player too.

Pouring Your Heart Out for Football

President Ronald Reagan once had a say about football: “It’s a game in which you can feel a clean hatred for your opponent.” The way most of the world refers to it as “American football” more or less distinguishes the sport as a national sport for the United States of America alone, blatantly so that even an American president was famously quoted for it.  For Americans, this is not merely a game played on a rectangular field by two opposing teams with an inflated leather ball, while the two teams trying to score points by thrashing and bumping at each other, creating such a powerful surge of impact for the players and a similarly strong emotions for the fans. For Americans, football is identity.

As Reagan said, the hatred you feel towards your opponent is a clean one. All is fair in football. Although there might many injuries suffered by the players because of the rough physical nature of the game, every checking, blocking, grabbing, tackling, and perhaps some concussions and blood-spurting was worth it when the ball was carried across the opponent’s goal line or kicked through the opponent’s goalposts. This is might be one of the reasons why Americans value this sport so much. It has been some kind of obligation to focus their entire attention on the game, whether it is played on their television screen or directly in front of them on the field. There are so many emotions involved.

Emotions of football fans will be peaking especially when Super Bowl is approaching. Super Bowl is the annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL), the major professional football league in the United States. Typically held in February each year, Super Bowl is one of the most popular sporting events in the United States. This event attracts a momentous amount television audience. It is where the hardcore football fans across the country and around the world gather to celebrate this annual national sport tradition. This ostensibly shows that by the end of the day, it is not just a sport; football is all about pouring your heart out and being proud.
